The band from that time was best described like this:
Stepmother is Lukas Simonis (Dull Schicksal, VRIL, Coolhaven …), Jeroen Visser (Fendika & K-Sanchis, Ensemble Raye, Pale Nudes …), Bill Gilonis (The Work, The Hat Shoes, Hail …) and David Kerman (5UUs, Present, Thinking Plague, Aranis …). Anglo-American-Dutch post-punk prog rock and experimental soundscapes with a dash of Bonzo Dog Band thrown in. All seasoned musicians, who are not afraid to use a studio as an instrument as well.
Stepmother flirts with genres without ever bending or compromising to them, they pervert the codes, juggle with references and thus create a fundamentally bizarre and mutating album between pop and crazy post-punk. A reunion of an 80s band that never existed: twangy guitars, nifty keyboards, zany drumming, vocal histrionics à la The Rutles (well, sort of), lop-sided rhythms, regurgitated spam lyrics. What more could you ask for? The journey we take on introduces us to mass murderer Curtis Lemay, Serge Gainsbourg, sex ads, neo-liberal communism, Nigerian online scams, neo-Surrealist blabbering and Dickensian psycho fluff.
Since then, the group has radically reinvented itself and is now working to release its second LP/CD.
The addition of Slovenian singer Tisa World with her wide range of vocal abilities has significantly changed the group's sound.
Stepmother's recordings should be categorized as ‘spamrock’, exploring the boundaries of traditional 4/4 pop music . Their music is strongly characterised by the different backgrounds and musical presence of the band members (): Jeroen Visser (composer / post-punk / improvisation / Ethiopia), Bill Gilonis (post-punk, experimental musician / soundscape artist), Lukas Simonis (improvisation / Brecht-Weilerei / sound art) and newly, Tisa World (performance / composition / conducting).
Our new album is to be released early 2025
